Some boiling of the frog going on in the UK. It amazes me how many British people seem indifferent to the freedoms their forebears died for. Authoritarians on the far left and right hate our freedoms, of course, but the majority of people don't know how lucky they are and why these things are worth preserving. The examples in this post would have been unthinkable a generation ago, but now everyone shrugs their shoulders.
"It amazes me how many British people seem indifferent to the freedoms their forebears died for." i don't think it's that- it's a case of REALLY not having a clue how to get out of it.
This article has just about every stupid meme about Stasi UK, so it’s a nice place to pull them apart
The 30 arrests a day are for malicious communications, mainly threatening your neighbour on Facebook
The Online Safety Act requires age verification for some material. If you think that’s unjustifiable use of personal information, what exactly do you think your kids should be seeing?
And if X decided that a particular parliamentary debate should be adult viewing, or the testimony of a rape victim, they were very probably correct.
Allison Pearson faced no charges, and again we have the viewpoint of a media worker which the police are not allowed to challenge.
You can’t “visibly pray” inside the cordon around an abortion clinic. It’s intimidation and it’s illegal.
Look, I get why some posts feel vile and why you’d want something done. But these laws don’t just catch the worst people — they’re deliberately vague. ‘Grossly offensive’ or ‘causing anxiety’ has been used against:
a woman complaining about her NHS treatment
parents in a school WhatsApp group
people posting Bible verses
comedians making jokes
teenagers posting rap lyrics
Once you give police the power to arrest first and decide later whether something is criminal, the same tools get used on whatever the government or the loudest lobby group dislikes that week.
Free speech isn’t there to protect nice speech — everyone already agrees with that. It exists for the speech that powerful people want to silence. The moment you say ‘yeah but this time it’s different’, you’re handing them a loaded gun and hoping they never turn around and point it at you or your friends.
If someone is actually threatening violence or doxxing people, we already have laws for that — harassment, stalking, credible threats. Use those. Don’t cheer for thought-crime laws that can be weaponised the moment the political weather changes.
Cool, so when the next government you hate is in power and starts arresting people for your memes, you’ll be totally fine with it, right?
We’re a nation of 70 million people. Sometimes things go wrong and some idiot local copper with a trans identified family member goes rogue and tries one on. And the prosecutions are ridiculed and fail, as they should. The idea that our jails are filling up with free speech heroes is rightist cack.
Thankfully we do not have an absolutist idea of free speech as the US has, and thankfully free speech is not under attack by the government. It is under attack by quangos, corporations and NHS trusts, but the dumb rightists are too busy screaming “jailed for a tweet” to stand up for Amy Gallagher and Sean Corby.
Existing legislation has proven unable to tackle venal corporations on the internet, the OSA is necessary.
Mate, you’re making the classic liberal-left mistake of thinking censorship powers only ever get used on the “bad guys”.
Let me give you cases that should actually worry you:
Palestine Action activists arrested and charged under the exact same “malicious communications” laws for social media posts calling arms companies “genocidal”.
Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil members routinely investigated for “conspiracy to cause alarm” over tweets and Instagram posts.
Trade union reps disciplined or reported to police for calling scabs “scabs” in private Facebook groups (yes, that’s happened multiple times).
Anti-racism campaigners investigated for posts that “cause anxiety” to far-right groups (it cuts both ways).
NHS whistle-blowers like Amy Gallagher you mentioned — the same trust that went after her also uses the threat of police referrals to silence staff.
These are the exact same vague laws you’re defending. The Online Safety Act you call “necessary” is already being used to force platforms to delete pro-Palestine content at the government’s request.
You’re cheering for tools that Keir Starmer’s Home Office is happily handing to the next Tory government (or a Reform one). And when they start rounding up climate activists, strikers, and Palestinian solidarity campaigners for “harmful” speech, you’ll be shocked — shocked! — that the state turned the guns around.
Left-wing causes have always been the first ones crushed when speech laws get weaponised. Ask any old-school trade unionist or 1980s anti-apartheid activist.
So no, this isn’t “rightist cack”. It’s basic civil liberties 101. If you only defend free speech for people you agree with, you’re not on the left — you’re just on the side of power this week.
Nonsense. Palestine Action were banned for attacking factories and police officers. I’ll take it that the rest of your hysteria is similarly ill-founded. I particularly liked the one about the OSA being used to de-platform “pro-Palestinian” content. What are they going to do, shut the BBC down? 🤣🤣🤣
You sound like you got lost on your way from the Your Party conference.
Okay, how’s this for reason? Your claims of censorship of pro Palestinian voices, when the BBC has just spent 3 years telling us there’s a genocide and famine in Gaza, when blatantly there was neither, makes your other claims suspect.
The legal remedies available to the British government have not managed to stop US corporations pushing harmful algorithms on children. The OSA was necessary.
I thought the ‘medical’ procedure surgically removes the conscience.
Isn't it a thought crime if you believe in the faith of the land?
The Church of England general synod should pass a measure to create a new day of remembrance for the ten million Britons sentenced to death under the 1865 act that makes abortion a crime punished by lifetime penal servitude.
We cannot carry on with ten million dead to the war on natural order.
Women going for an termination, believe it or not, are frequently not in a great state of mind, and having to go by a religious protest is something we have ruled they shouldn’t have to put up with. If protesters want to ‘visibly pray’, they have the rest of the country outside of the buffer zones to do it in.
This is the compromise arrived at after protestors were stopped from chanting, waving placards and spitting on women arriving at family planning clinics.
She can't sign the death warrant in good faith if she's not sound of mind.
No magistrate would grant the execution order.
And where is the father, grant parents, uncles, cousins etc. of the child?
We cannot allow our most vulnerable subjects to be exterminated on the whim of a woman who's not in a great state of mind.
I want to see recordings of mothers breaking glass after seeing their child's heart beat and A.I. generated life flashing before the victims eyes before they attempt to get two or four key medical exemptions from certified medical doctors to commit the ultimate violence towards another human being.
The only prayer she's doing is for Satan and Lilith. The satanic sacrament of abortion is literally killing our civilization. Two hundred thousand Britons are sentenced without trial against their right to life every year.
Over a billion souls cry out before baptism poisoned and torn to pieces before not being given a burial.
We need a massive campaign to stop the atrocity factories and big lies "my body my choice" when it's unlawful killing inflicted by a firing squad of "medical doctors", and "the best interests of the child" when English family law courts refuse to hear local authorities and fathers' injunctions for a stay of execution or the citizens right to life etc.
The truth and reconciliation process for a billion killed people, and hundreds of millions of cuckolded men deceived, has not yet begun. But when feminist Marxist misandry gender apartheid is overthrown, we'll get justice heard, seen, and done.

Excellent. Captures the darkly comic, absurd and sinister all at once. What strange place the UK has become.

Managing decline indeed. The UK sounds beyond redemption at this point.

I am centre right lol. You will not accept reason so there is no point debating any further. This online bill is an over kill. End

How is prayer intimidating?
